The GRC Approach

GRC is able to provide clients with an integrated approach to the design, installation and maintenance of green roofs.

Almost any habitat that can be re-created could in theory be created on a roof, however in practice technical and financial constraints mean that in temperate climates grasslands, sedum mats, mosses and arrested pioneer communities will tend to dominate.

Logs aid habitat mitigation on a green roofHowever, in the UK there is growing interest in using green roofs as mitigation for habitats lost during urban regeneration, especially on brownfield sites. Members of the GRC have been actively involved in this interest over the years, promoting and design green roofs, so called 'brown' roofs and green roofs designed for biodiversity. Members are also involved in research in this area to ensure that the right build up and design can be implemented to provide the long term effect desired.

GRC is able to develop green roof designs for ecological mitigation purposes. Although there is generally a lack of information relating to the fauna and flora of green roofs in the UK our close collaboration with colleagues in Switzerland provides our consultancy with the tools and knowledge to manipulate green roof technology to provide the best solution on a project by project basis.

GRC uses its experience to work with clients to overcome concerns regarding cost maintenance, look and structural capability. Through design the short term concerns regarding cost and deliverability and long term concerns regarding look and maintenance are overcome providing confidence in the designed system.

An ecological approach, rather than a horticultural approach can certainly resolve issues, which would otherwise prohibit the use of green roof technology in new and old developments. This approach takes into consideration the vital issues regarding structure, aspect, stormwater management (SUDS) and specification. The complete solution through the consideration of all aspects of the building, ecology and the client's needs.

ECOLOGICAL AND STRUCTURAL considerations have a direct impact on the green roof design and components.

Providing the client with a UNIQUE site-specific solution, directly in contrast with proprietary 'off the shelf' systems.

Consideration of costs and whole life costs are an important element in this approach to provide cost effective solutions with long-term benefits.
